Whether you’re a new, current, or aspiring leader, a Leadership & Management qualification (ILM) will give you the skills you need to reach your goals.Rhos, Senior Business Support Administrator, recently shared her recent ILM journey with us. Read her story below:
“I was in a Business Support Assistant role when I first explored being able to undertake the ILM L3. I felt the need to do something different to the NVQs in Business Administration, and wanted to steer my career into management. I broached the idea with my line manager and thankfully it was agreed I could sign up to the course, and that opportunities would be offered in order to meet any evidence criteria that I may not be able to access in my Assistant post.
The support I received from both my tutor and my assessor was brilliant. Classroom sessions were engaging and my assessor was always on hand if I needed guidance. We met regularly, and I felt assisted and empowered to remain on track with the expectations and requirements of the course. My cohort of fellow students were great, us learning from and supporting each other along the way.
Having to collaborate with my cohort and presenting to others on my college days, as well as pushing myself outside of my comfort zone to build the necessary evidence, increased my confidence massively which in turn helped me gain a promotion to a Business Support Administrator role and saw a salary increase whilst undertaking the course. Since finishing, I have been offered two Business Centre Manager opportunities on an acting-up and secondment basis and secured a new substantive post as a Senior Business Support Administrator, so progression has been rapid. I know the knowledge and skills learnt through the course were of great benefit to me being offered all of these roles and I believe being able to draw on elements of the ILM in interviews really made me distinguishable from the other candidates.
Since becoming a line manager, I continue to reflect on my learning and reference the tools and techniques explored within the units. I find the knowledge I gained around self-awareness particularly valuable in the management of my team, this not only helping me understand how my behaviours affect others, but also gives me an insight into my staff as individuals and how I can adapt my approach to be an effective manager.
I would highly recommend completing the ILM, not only for the qualification, but for the confidence growth, to meet new people and try something new – the time and effort invested really made a difference to me and my future.”
