On Friday 21 June, the first Harlow LD Festival took place at Harlow Town Park, marking the beginning of the celebrations for Learning Disability Awareness Week. The theme of this festival was ‘Can You See Me’, focusing on bringing visibility to individuals with learning disabilities and highlighting their unique voices and talents.

One of the standout performances at the festival was by the ACL Supported Learning learners, who captivated the audience with their creativity and passion. These learners showcased their talents through a variety of mediums, including poetry and music, demonstrating the importance of self-expression and inclusion.

Using words that held personal significance to them, the learners crafted their own poems, offering a glimpse into their thoughts and emotions. Through their poetry, they were able to communicate their stories and perspectives, inviting others to see the world through their eyes.

In addition to their poetry, the learners also delivered a heartwarming performance of a sing and sign song to the song sunshine by Gabrielle. This performance not only showcased their musical abilities but also highlighted the power of communication through sign language, breaking down barriers and promoting inclusivity.

The ACL Supported Learning learners’ participation in the Harlow LD Festival not only provided them with a platform to showcase their talents but also served as a reminder of the importance of celebrating diversity and promoting understanding and acceptance. Their performances were a testament to the fact that every individual has a unique voice that deserves to be heard and appreciated.

As we reflect on the festival and its theme of ‘Can You See Me’, let us continue to strive for a more inclusive society where every individual, regardless of their abilities, is seen, heard, and valued.
