Nightingale Care Bursary Success Stories – Sherry Mills

Sherry Mills enrolled on a Level 5 in Leadership and Management fully funded by the Nightingale Care Bursary. Sherry chose to do this course as ‘I love to help others and enhance someone’s quality of life.’

  1. What district within Essex are you based? My role I am based across whole of Essex covering the following areas: Colchester, Clacton, Harlow, Basildon, Benfleet, Chelmsford, Canvey and Brentwood

  1. How did you hear about the Nightingale Care Bursary?

My employer ECL

  1. Please tell us a little bit about your current role/course:

I am currently completing a course Level 5 in Leadership and management with support from my tutor Caroline. I started my course in June and I don’t know why it has taken me so long. Since I have started, I found the coursework so relatable to my role and for me to develop so supportive. I have often found occasions where I refer to topics I have learnt in my role when supporting me in a situation.

I used to struggle academically at school which made me hesitant to complete this course, but my tutor is supportive and with her support I feel I have really learnt so much, and I have found a new love for course work!

  1. What inspired you to seek a career within the Health & Care sector?

I grew up as a young carer and never originally wanted to work in care. I found myself in a job I wasn’t happy and couldn’t see my future.

I started working in care just over 10 years ago and I love to help others and enhance someone’s quality of life. I haven’t looked back since… unlike my friends and family I look forward to a Monday going to work.

  1. What would you say to others considering a career within Health and Social care?

Don’t think twice. If you want to help improve others lives and want job satisfaction, this is the career for you. I used to be shy to tell people what I do now I couldn’t be prouder. I started as a carer assistant; I am now a manager of multiple day services for adults. I have found a career with career progression and job satisfaction sometimes can be hard to find these days.

  1. How has Nightingale supported you in achieving your career goals/progression?

My first interview with nightingale I spoke with the curriculum lead and the tutor we spoke about my goals. My goal was to get a job I was due to interview for. Unfortunately, I wasn’t successful although I was offered another job opportunity. I remember meeting with Caroline I felt really deflated and she is more that a tutor she has been a mentor My coursework has been so relevant to the work I am doing this has given me confidence to grow and become a stronger manager. The time with your tutor going through assignments or talking through a topic with healthy debate I always walk away feel so motivated and enthusiastic.

I always speak to my team members about seeking these apprenticeships as opportunities as its one of the best decisions I have made.

  1. What is one thing you are proud of that you have achieved whilst completing your programme?

My level of confidence dealing with difficult conversations and situations at work.

  1. We’d like to know more about you outside of your studies, tell us about your hobbies, and interests…

I am a small workaholic who loves their job maybe a little too much. I love being with my family and having long walks, I enjoy getting my nails done and spending time with those closest to me. I love watching a good series too!
