I have been a freelance craft tutor for about 16 years; around 2 years ago, one piece of regular work I had came to an end due to funding. It was a piece of work that felt rewarding as I was working with a dementia group teaching art.
I had attended a few courses at the ACL and I saw a post looking for Parent Ambassadors. As I have 2 teenage daughters and am well aware that people don’t know a lot about the courses on offer at the ACL, I thought I could help.
During a time when I was looking for a way of making a difference the role really suited me, as I was able to tell a variety of people about the wonderful Family learning courses on offer. I also attended some useful training.
As a result of my previous experience and qualifications I have now gone on to become an ACL tutor teaching Silver Clay, alongside my freelance teaching, but I continue to make students aware of both the family learning courses and the parent ambassador programme.
I have found that volunteering brings its own rewards, be it confidence, work experience or a way of feeling valued.
