Inclusive careers event helps learners meet employers

ACL and the Young People with Disabilities team recently held two special SEND careers events. More than 100 people came along, and over 15 friendly employers were there to meet them.

The events gave learners the chance to:

  • Meet employers who welcome and support people with SEND
  • Find out about local support services
  • Explore different work and volunteering opportunities

These sessions are part of ACL and ECC’s ongoing work to help people build confidence, learn new skills and move towards volunteering or paid jobs.

Learners share their stories

Many learners said the event helped them feel more confident about their future.

Reece spoke about his journey. He started with ACL courses in digital skills, wellbeing and volunteering. He now has a paid job with Town & Country Cleaners and also volunteers at Havens Hospice.
He said: “ACL helped me build my confidence and skills. Now I’m working and volunteering in roles I really enjoy.”

Liam, who volunteers at Oxfam, came to the event to find new options.
“I found the event really useful. I’m hoping to move into retail so I can use the experience I’ve gained.”

Dan has taken many ACL courses, including hospitality, digital skills and employability. He is now applying for a role with Valentina Group, who offer specialist programmes for autistic people.
“I’m going through the recruitment process now. They use people with lived experience of autism to help run their training programme.”

Employers share their commitment

Employers also spoke about why inclusive recruitment matters.

Pranay from MITIE said they are a Disability Confident workforce and offer programmes to help people with disabilities gain experience in different sectors.

Linda and Louise from ECL explained how they support people with learning disabilities, autism and other neurodivergent conditions into steady, meaningful work.

Thank you

ACL would like to thank all learners, employers, support organisations and staff who made the events a success.

These events show how ACL helps people grow in confidence, learn new skills and take their next steps into volunteering or paid employment.
