Five years ago, after my then seven-year-old was diagnosed with dyslexia, I wanted to be able to help him with school. Being undiagnosed dyslexic at the time, I had not done well at school. But my son gave me the drive to apply to ACL to study GCSE English.
Nervousness does not cut how I felt. However, I sat the diagnostic test and the sense of pride I felt getting onto the course was magnificent.
Having no confidence in myself; due to my own dyslexia (now diagnosed).
The class was small, and the teacher was great, I was given an in-house dyslexic test which show the traits and was given extra time in my exam.
The course was enjoyable and the biggest lesson I learnt was, a lot of the things that I preconceived as scary, was things we all do automatically when we write. This lesson made the whole experience less daunting.
So, by the time I got to the exam, I felt mildly confident as we had done several mock exams in class. My results were amazing, I had scored an eight.
This journey gave me such a buzz, that I wanted to study more. Hence me going on to do an Access course in Criminology which I loved. This led onto the criminology and law degree that I am now taking a year from as I have returned to ACL to get my foundational maths.
The class is a mixture of all ages, of all genders and great fun. Returning to ACL was not a difficult decision, in fact it was an easy one. ACL not only helps you achieve your goals, but it also helps builds your own self confidence and gives you a great sense of pride.
I would highly recommend ACL to everyone, no matter what your level is, or what you think is your level, ACL can help you as they have me.
