Lifelong Learning Week has given us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our learners who exemplify lifelong learning and share stories of those who transformed their lives through ACL Essex.
Lifelong learning comes with so many benefits, including, keeping up with the latest technologies and trends, developing new skills, and finding new opportunities in both your personal and professional life.
Read on to hear how lifelong learning has benefited some of our learners and how you can embrace lifelong learning in your own life.
Gary: Digital Learner
After becoming unemployed during the Covid pandemic, Gary decided to boost his CV, knowledge, and skills with ACL, in the hope of getting back into work.
“Going to the courses at ACL Essex has given me a structure in my life. It gives me a reason to get up in the morning, go to the course and study for that day. It sets me up for the rest of the week.”
Gary received the ‘Lifelong Learning’ award at the ACL Essex Awards in 2024. This award celebrates people who know there are many opportunities to further their knowledge and develop their skills, and that it’s never too late to start.
Kanjanarawan: ESOL Learner
Kanjanarawan received the ‘Outstanding Achievement’ award at the ACL Essex Awards this year. She moved to Chelmsford from Thailand six years ago and joined an ESOL class to improve her English.
“In the beginning I was very stuck with speaking English because it’s not my first language. I don’t like to be at home. I like to work. I wanted to work and help my husband and the community. My English wasn’t very good, so I looked up where to learn English and found ACL Essex.”
After successfully completing her ESOL classes, Kanjanarawan decided to continue her learning journey and enrol on a Beauty Therapy course.
Claire: Maths Learner
Clacton resident Claire joined various courses at ACL Essex to support her career goal of becoming a midwife.
“My goal is to study at university to become a midwife and to do that I also need a Level 2 Maths qualification. I missed out on years of Maths classes at school but my tutor at ACL Clacton is amazing. I was able to pass my Level 1 in Maths, which, for me personally, is a massive achievement. I was really chuffed with myself for that. I’m 53 and I’d never passed a Maths exam in my life, and I thought I never would, but I did and it’s brilliant.”
Claire has also shared how important the social side of learning and classmate support has been for her.
Cornelius: Digital Learner
After much consideration, and some self-doubt, Cornelius decided to join a course at ACL Harlow.
“I was umming and ahhing about going to ACL Essex. When I joined, I thought I’d last a couple of months, if that. But my experience there has been eye-opening. I’m so happy to be achieving something and knowing that putting the effort in is worth it.”
Cornelius also shared his views on starting a fresh learning journey later on in life.
