Essex County Council’s Levelling Up fund has paid for £60,000 worth of new STEM equipment for four ACL Essex centres.
ACL (Clacton/Colchester/Basildon/Harlow) has received a share of the STEM equipment. The new equipment will provide interactive, practical activities to improve the learning environment for people on STEM and health-based qualifications.
Science will be brought to life thanks to new anatomical models, which will help learners on science courses take apart and look at internal organs. Other clinical equipment, such as blood pressure machines, will support learners on health and care courses. Healthcare learners will have access to mannequin heads to practise giving eye drops. They will also get the chance to learn how to use syringes and thermometers in a medical setting.
The wide range of new STEM equipment will give learners the chance to take on practical tasks during their courses at ACL (Clacton/Colchester/Basildon/Harlow). The adult education provider aims to encourage more people to consider a career in the health and science sectors and improve the learning environment for people on STEM and health-based courses. The equipment also allows ACL Essex to increase their offer in these subject areas.
New courses using the STEM equipment will be added from January 2024, including fast-track GCSEs, Community and Family Learning courses, Health and Social Care courses, and more. The new equipment will also support learning in sustainable subjects and careers including retrofitting.
The new STEM equipment also directly supports ACL Essex’s strategic aims to provide residents with high quality learning experiences, enrich their laboratory and experimental spaces, and improve access to hands-on learning experiences.
