What funding is available to employers?

Our apprenticeship training experts are here to make funding simple and stress-free. We’ll work with you to agree a fair and transparent price, explore payment options, help you set up your digital account, and guide you through accessing any available funding.

Employers typically pay for apprenticeship training in one of three ways:

Apprenticeship Levy

If your annual payroll is over £3 million, you’ll pay into the Apprenticeship Levy. These funds go into your digital account and are used to pay for training monthly.

Co-investment

Most small and medium-sized employers pay just 5% of the agreed apprenticeship cost, while the government covers the remaining 95%. In some cases, the government will fully fund training for apprentices aged 16–21, or 19–24 with an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan or care experience.

Levy Transfer (Gifting)

Levy-paying employers can transfer up to 25% of unused funds to support other businesses. The Essex Apprenticeship Levy Transfer Service can help you give or receive funding, and our experts will guide you through the process.

Additional incentives include:

  • £1,000 payment for each apprentice aged 16–18, or 19–24 with an EHC plan or care experience (paid in two instalments).
  • Care leavers aged 16–24 may receive an extra £3,000 payment.
  • Employers can also benefit from National Insurance relief when hiring apprentices under 25, meaning no employer NICs on earnings up to £50,270 per year.

We’ll support you every step of the way to make sure you get the maximum benefit from available funding.

Can I use apprenticeships to upskill my existing staff?

What is expected of me as an employer?

One of the key responsibilities is to allocate 6 hours per week (based on a 30-hour week) of your apprentice’s contracted hours for off-the-job training.

Now, don’t worry, “off-the-job training” doesn’t mean your apprentice is stepping away from work. It’s all about structured learning that enhances their skills and knowledge, making them even more valuable to your business. This training can include:

  • Flexible learning methods: Online modules, workshops, or guided study.
  • Practical training opportunities: Applying new skills in real work scenarios.
  • Additional learning activities: Projects, mentoring, and shadowing.

This approach ensures apprentices are continuously developing, boosting their confidence and capability while contributing to your organisation. Off-the-job training is an investment in your team’s growth, and we’ll help you make it work seamlessly.

At ACL Essex, we’re committed to making your apprenticeship experience smooth, supportive, and successful. Here’s what you can expect from us:

  • Flexible, blended learning: Our programmes combine online learning with face-to-face sessions at local ACL centres, giving apprentices a variety of ways to learn.
  • Dedicated tutor support: Every apprentice has a personal tutor who meets with them monthly (online or in person) to guide their progress and prepare them for their End Point Assessment.
  • Regular progress reviews: Every 12 weeks, we’ll review progress with the apprentice, their line manager, and the tutor to keep everything on track.
  • Extra learning opportunities: We offer additional workshops and seminars to support off-the-job learning and help apprentices go further.
