Hear from our Hairdressing and Barbering learners about their experiences, how they have benefited and what their ambitions are for the future.
We spoke with Lisa, a Hairdressing Level 2 student at ACL who has studying at ACL since October 2023. She shared her thoughts on her course experience, saying:
“I love it, I had no hairdressing experience at all before coming here, I had completely no idea, but I love it!”
We asked Lisa about her motivations for pursuing a career in hairdressing despite not having any previous experience.
“I wanted a change, had my 30th birthday, wasn’t in love with my job and I just wanted to try something else and found there was a course, threw caution into the wind, said I was going to go for it and here I am, but I just love it. I love talking to people, I love doing hair, I like creating something different, I love all of it.. I even love the science behind it (learning about scalp conditions, colouring and mixing), who knew I was going to like science?!”
Lisa is making great progress on her course. When we asked her about her future ambitions and plans with her qualifications, she shared:
“Next year I’m going to do Level 3 hair and barbering and in the future, I’d love to have a little salon. I think it is achievable over the next couple of years with what we have learnt on the course.”
Lisa is a fantastic role model for those thinking of changing careers, we were eager to hear her advice for those considering starting a hairdressing course at ACL:
“Oh do it! 100% do it, because there’s no reason why not to. I’ve never been interested in hair, I loved colouring hair, I’ve only ever done it with my mates in the kitchen having a good time. But I love it, it’s so interesting I really enjoy it and want to do it all the time now.”
Our courses not only provide learners with the opportunity to gain qualifications but wider benefits of improved wellbeing, self-confidence, a sense of accomplishment and the opportunity to contribute positively to the environment and their community.
“It literally has changed my life my story is one where I’ve become addicted, and I was in a bad place, and this has just given me another lease of life.” Brian, ACL Barbering Learner
“We’ve been cutting hair for people who are in need or in temporary housing or some of them are homeless and gives you a really good feeling to do something like that as well”.
“We’ve learned all the skills how to make somebody feel at ease putting the gown on how to wash somebody’s hair, different hair types, different scalp conditions. It all helps you to feel more confident it’s a real boost.” Lyn, ACL Hairdressing Learner
“Seeing that client walk away with a smile, happy with what you created is just so uplifting and completing the course means I’ve completed something for the first time ever and I’m really really proud of myself”. Rachel, ACL Hairdressing Learner
“I didn’t expect that I would like it this much because I didn’t have any experience before, but I really enjoy it. Next year I’m going to do the Level 3 as I want to continue to progress, I enjoy styling, I enjoy playing with the colours. It’s like therapy, I’m relaxing whilst I’m doing hair, when I see the finished result when the clients are happy, that makes me happy also”. ACL Hairdressing Learner
Claire Barclay, ACL Hairdressing, Barbering and Beauty Curriculum Lead explains the many benefits and potential pathways an ACL course can take you down.
“Here at ACL, within our hair and beauty we offer so many courses for our learners. You could be learning cutting, colouring, plaiting. With beauty, it will be waxing, eye treatments, manicures, pedicures but it’s not only about the practical treatments it’s about the confidence that you get in the people skills, making new friends and just getting out there.”
“We offer so many courses and we cater for everybody it’s just a great qualification to be in you could end up working for yourself you could go into opening up your own salon it leads into so much”.
“Sustainability is massive in our industry we started to get involved with Green Salon Collective where we have the recycling hair bins so we brought together a sustainability hair competition.” Claire Barclay, ACL Hairdressing, Barbering and Beauty Curriculum Lead.
We would like to congratulate our learners on all they have accomplished this year and thank them for being an inspiration to others as ACL ambassadors.
