Hamida’s Journey into Early Years Education

We recently caught up with Hamida, a learner who has progressed from Level 2 to Level 3 in Early Years with the support of the Poppins Bursary. Her story is a brilliant example of how determination, support, and the right funding can open doors to new opportunities.

Starting My Journey

Before coming to live in the UK, I had completed a degree in statistics in my home country (Pakistan). I got married and focused on my family. I found out about the Level 2 Early Years Practitioner course through friends and applied. This was a great starting point for me to boost my confidence and gain workplace skills and knowledge in the sector as a volunteer in a preschool.

Having an eight-year gap from studying my degree to starting my level 2, my confidence was low. But by volunteering and joining the course, I was able to boost my confidence and independence again. I enjoyed learning about child development. Working with the children at the preschool helped me develop my skills and confidence and also gave me a better understanding of my own children’s needs and development.

Boosting My Skills and Confidence

My tutor and assessor supported me throughout the course, and I gained valuable experience through doing the level 2. This gave me confidence to then apply for my level 3. My tutor and assessor encouraged me to gain employment and access the Poppins bursary, this meant I could continue my studies and start earning money. I would not have been able to consider additional training at this point if it wasn’t for the Poppins bursary, it would have been too expensive for me to self-fund.

My Career and Future Goals

I am really enjoying the course and continue to get support from my tutor and assessor to gain new knowledge and skills. I enjoy working with the children in the preschool, this age group have a great energy that I enjoy. The course enables me to have a good balance between work, study and family commitments. I hope once I’m qualified, I will gain more experience and confidence to work towards a supervisory post and increase my hours and responsibilities.
