GCSE results: Charlie makes his dreams come true

Adult learners across Essex opened their GCSE results on Thursday 21 August. This year, ACL Essex  supported lots of adults to boost their career opportunities by gaining GCSEs in English, Maths and Science.

Charlie Rose, 20, from Walton-on-the-Naze, studied GCSE English at ACL Essex’s Colchester site, gaining a grade 4 pass that will enable him to study Drama at college to realise his dream to become an actor. Here Charlie shares his experiences of learning at ACL Essex:

“ACL Essex helped me big, double time. It was focused, it was educational, we got things done – they had everything I needed.

“I want to be an actor, and the GCSE will get me there. I’ve got two audition shows coming up very, very soon. I’ll be looking at doing a Performing Arts Level 2 course. English is a great subject to support acting, because of the language and the speech, for me to understand scripts.

“My mum encouraged me to come to ACL Essex, and it was worth the shot. My English teacher was the most helpful teacher ever! Without that teacher I would not be where I am today about to make my dreams come true.”

Charlie’s mum, Julie Long, is very proud of her son’s achievement. She added: “Charlie has got autism, so he struggles with English language. But he came home every day happy from ACL Essex. Before coming to ACL Essex, he had a private tutor for three years to help him with his English. I’d encouraged Charlie to do one more year as a last chance. And he’s done it. Smashed it! And I believe he will be an actor.

“I know just how hard the journey’s been for him. He’s really paved the way for his dreams.”
