From Hairdressing to Childminding: Claire’s Story

We recently caught up with Claire to learn how her passion for supporting children led her to make a bold career change from hairdressing to childminding. With help from ACL Essex and the Gateway to Childminding grant, Claire has built a thriving childcare setting that’s making a real difference in her community. Read on to hear what she has to say.

“My journey into Early Years started with a simple love for helping children learn and grow. I’ve always believed that good childcare is at the heart of a strong community, and that belief is what led me to make a big career change, from hairdressing to childminding.

With support from the Gateway to Childminding grant, I was able to register as a childminder and set up a warm, welcoming space for local families. What began as a small idea has now grown into a thriving childcare setting. As demand increased, I took on an assistant so that more families in the community could access the care and support they needed.

Every day is different, full of laughter, curiosity, and those little moments that make the job so special. Working with children and their families is incredibly rewarding, and I love being part of something that makes a real difference in our local area.

If anyone is thinking about a career in Early Years, I’d say go for it. The support from ACL Essex and the Gateway to Childminding grant has been amazing. It’s a job that keeps you learning, connects you with your community, and makes you proud of what you do every single day.”
