At ACL Essex, we offer a pathway for individuals interested in becoming professional counsellors. Our courses cater to those beginning their journey, providing the foundational skills needed to pursue professional recognition with the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB). However, the significance of counselling skills extends beyond those aiming to work in the field. Whether you’re a manager, a leader, or work in a customer-facing role, understanding the principles of counselling can transform the way you interact with others.
The Importance of Counselling Skills
Counselling is more than a profession; it’s a skill that can profoundly impact various areas of your life. As individuals navigate increasingly complex personal and professional relationships, the ability to offer emotional support, listen attentively, and understand the perspectives of others is invaluable. Managers, for instance, often find themselves dealing with their team members’ emotional well-being. Leaders who demonstrate empathy and can support their peers through challenging times often distinguish themselves as being truly supportive leaders. In customer service, being able to navigate difficult conversations with empathy can improve outcomes and strengthen relationships.
These skills are essential because they nurture understanding, encourage open communication, and ultimately lead to better personal and professional relationships. While some might assume that counselling is only for those in the field, it is a universally beneficial skill set.
Counselling Courses at ACL Essex
At ACL Essex, we have structured our counselling courses to provide a progressive learning journey, supporting both beginners and those looking to further develop their skills.
Introduction to Counselling
This course is designed for beginners who want to explore the world of counselling. It is a course offered live online and in-person within one of our ACL centres that offers an overview of the key principles, including counselling theory, ethical considerations, and person-centred practices. Participants will gain valuable skills in effective listening—crucial for both personal and professional environments.
Whether you’re aiming to enhance your communication skills at work or considering a career in counselling, this course offers a practical introduction. It also acts as a pre-requirement for those who wish to move on to the more advanced Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills.
Counselling Level 2
The Level 2 course leads to a CPCAB Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills. This certification delves deeper into person-centred counselling concepts, building on the foundational knowledge gained in the introductory course. Participants will develop a better understanding of counselling theories, ethics, and practices, along with the competencies needed to engage in a helping interaction ethically and safely.
This course is ideal for those looking to use counselling skills in support roles, whether in their workplace, community, or home environment. Whilst it’s important to note that this course does not qualify participants to practice as professional counsellors, it prepares them for more advanced training and is an essential step toward becoming a professional counsellor.
Counselling Level 3
For those ready to take their skills to the next level, the Level 3 course offers deeper insights into counselling theory, ethics, and mental health. This course is intended for students who have already completed CPCAB Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills or equivalent qualification, evidencing substantial reflective practice and person-centred practical skills gained in programmes of at least 170 hours, delivered live online or in-person tuition under tutor supervision and want to continue progressing toward a professional counselling career.
The Level 3 qualification enhances employability for those working in support roles, such as health and social care, teaching, and advocacy. Furthermore, it opens more opportunities for career progression and is a required a stepping stone toward practitioner-level qualifications, such as the CPCAB Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling.
