Coaching Professional Apprenticeship: Davina’s Story

We recently caught up with Level 5 Coaching Professional apprentice Davina to hear how her apprenticeship journey is going. She chose to use an apprenticeship to upskill in her current role, which challenges the myth that apprenticeships are only for people starting out or changing careers. As a result, Davina has strengthened her coaching, communication and leadership skills. She is already using these new tools at work to support colleagues and create positive change across the service.

Please tell us a little bit about your current role:

I am currently working as Deputy Head of Service for North Essex within the Essex Child and Family Wellbeing Service (ECFWS). The service supports children and young people from pre-birth to 19 years (up to 25 for those with SEND), working closely with families to improve outcomes and wellbeing.

In my role, I deputise for the Head of Service and line manage colleagues across the service. I lead on service delivery and change initiatives, write reports for commissioners, chair meetings, and oversee subcontractor performance.

I am passionate about supporting children and families and am committed to making a positive and lasting difference to their lives and future outcomes.

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?

As a relatively new Deputy Head of Service, it felt the right time to expand my knowledge as a leader. I wanted to improve my coaching and communication skills, my ability to support and motivate colleagues, and my confidence in leading others.

I chose this specific apprenticeship programme due to it aligning with my role and career goals. It allowed me to apply the coaching tools immediately in the workplace, allowing me to learn through both coaching experience and theory.

What are your career goals?

My career goal is to continue growing and developing as a leader. Over time, I’d like to further build my coaching skills and integrate them into the organisation to support team development and overall success.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship?

Since expressing interest in the apprenticeship, the process has been smooth. I have really enjoyed taking part in the apprenticeship, and the way the course is structured has suited me well, with a teaching session followed by set work to complete. The teaching sessions have been informative and supportive, and the small group format has made the classes feel personable. I would definitely recommend it to others.

What do you like doing outside of work?

I love spending time with my family, giving my daughter new experiences and making memories together. To relax, I enjoying walking the dog, Reformer Pilates and running. I am a season ticket holder for a local football team and enjoy going to all the home games.
