Just a short distance from our Chelmsford centre lies the idyllic village of Great Waltham, home to a cozy family-owned coffee shop that also features an art gallery. The artwork created by our learners blends seamlessly with the café’s ambiance, providing a delightful setting to savour your meal while appreciating the stunning pieces on display. We’re thrilled to partner with local small businesses to provide a platform for our learners to showcase and sell their pieces.

Our ACL learners have their artwork proudly on display at the local cafe, showcasing their talent and hard work. Some of them have only recently rediscovered their passion for art, after many years away from it. It’s truly inspiring to see how much they have developed and how proud they are of their creations. This just proves that it’s never too late to pick up a new skill and who knows, it might even bring in some extra cash!

“It’s amazing how far each of my learners has come since they started their course in September, I’m so proud of showcasing their work for everyone to enjoy” Lucy Johnson – ACL Creative Tutor

One of the learners with artwork on display, Julia Winter talks to us about her experiences.

“I had never done any art before (except at school but not to GCSE standard even) and wasn’t sure I had the ability to draw but having gone through chemotherapy treatment during lockdown and deciding to retire from work, I decided I wanted to try something new which would test me. So I enrolled on the 10 week drawing for the terrified course.”

I was amazed to find that I could draw and that what I produced was recognisable as the item I was trying to copy, so I signed up for the further 18 week and 2 week consolidating courses.

Lucy (tutor) has been an inspiration to me and has really pushed me to try lots of different techniques and approaches. This has resulted in me learning so much more than just how to draw. For example, I am more confident to try new things and when I get stressed, I now have the skills to spend time creating art, which is very relaxing and gives me a real purpose to produce something I’m proud of.

I have signed up for the level 1 course starting in September to enhance my learning further.

I would also like to say thank you to your amazing reception and premises team, especially Dave for ensuring I had a place to park, as I am a full time wheelchair user and need space at the side of my car to get my wheelchair in and out.

I am very impressed with the new larger accessible bays and look forward to using them in September.”
