These courses can lead to Functional Skills or GCSE Maths. Many learners have already improved their skills and changed their lives.

ACL Essex is celebrating its maths learners this World Maths Day (25 March)

This World Maths Day, 25 March, adult education provider ACL Essex is highlighting how maths plays a vital part in everyone’s daily lives. Whether creating a budget for the month, measuring for a DIY project or following a recipe, good maths skills help people every day.

This Easter, ACL Essex is launching a range of short maths courses to help adults build confidence with everyday numbers. These sessions link directly to real-life tasks, such as budgeting, shopping, cooking and managing money. They are ideal for anyone who wants to grow their skills at home or at work, or for learners who need extra support alongside another course. After completing a short course, learners can move on to more focused topics or join an accredited maths programme.

Learners have stepped onto GCSE Maths and Functional Skills courses to further their career or to progress to university courses. Hundreds of adults have developed their numeracy skills at ACL Essex over the last 12 months.

ACL Essex is now shining a light on their successes and the range of maths courses on offer, both in person and online.

Claire Fletcher, 53, Clacton, dreamed of becoming a midwife and says: “I’ve always struggled with Maths. My goal is to study at university to become a midwife and to do that I need a Level 2 qualification in Maths. I missed out on years of Maths classes but my tutor at ACL Clacton is amazing.”

She continued: “I was able to pass my Level 1 Functional Skills in Maths, which, for me personally, is a massive achievement. I was really chuffed with myself for that. I’m 53 and I’d never passed a Maths exam in my life, and I thought I never would, but I did and it’s brilliant. I’m now studying for my Level 2 qualification in Maths.”

Elle Major, has been studying ‘Maths All Levels’. She said: “I struggled with maths at school, so I never got a GCSE. I wanted to do nursing a few years ago but wasn’t accepted because I didn’t have my maths. Now, I’m hoping to achieve my Level 2 with ACL Essex, the equivalent of a GCSE, so I can finally go on to university. With the new skills I’ve learned, I’ve even managed to budget and put money aside for a trip to Barcelona!”

Cassie Moore, another maths student, shared: “The class was really supportive and helpful. We all helped each other out. I’ve started budgeting more for my daughter’s Christmas and birthday, for petrol and everything. It’s made a real difference.”

Sharon Gibbs added: “ACL Essex in Maldon opened my world up! I’ve become much more confident and even built a kitchen island at home thanks to my new maths skills. I’ve made new friends, and I’m determined to finish my course.”

ACL Essex offers a range of maths courses including short courses, which have been designed to improve mathematical confidence, and Functional Skills, which is ideal for numeracy skills before starting a GCSE to GCSE Foundation level (up to grade 5) and Higher level (5-9). It also offers an online fast track Maths GCSE and a standard GCSE Maths which starts in September.
