Celebrating Creativity and Sustainability in Hair Design

Summary

We recently held our Celebrating Creativity and Sustainability in Hair Design competition at ACL Colchester.

We recently held our Celebrating Creativity and Sustainability in Hair Design competition at ACL Colchester in partnership with Kleek Apprenticeships and Debut Training Academy. The competition aimed to highlight the amazing talent and creativity of our students in the hair design industry.

This occasion wasn’t just about showcasing talent; it was also an opportunity to motivate and educate about sustainable practices in the fashion and beauty industry. We are thrilled to collaborate with VTCT and our sponsor, Green Salon Collective, to bring this event to life.

Each learner’s design was assessed based on specific criteria:

  • Creativity and Innovation, which measures the originality and inventiveness of the sustainability concept
  • Relevance to Theme, which evaluates how well the concept aligns with sustainability principles
  • Quality of Presentation, which considers the overall execution and presentation of the mood board and final look
  • Impact and Message, which looks at how effectively the concept summary communicates the importance of sustainability.

The event was attended by fellow learners, industry professionals, and advocates of sustainable practices. This will not only celebrate the hard work and creativity of our learners but also foster discussions on the importance of sustainability in the hair industry.

“Sustainability is massive in our industry we started to get involved with Green Salon Collective where we have the recycling hair bins so we brought together a sustainability hair competition.” Claire Barclay, ACL Hairdressing, Barbering and Beauty Curriculum Lead

Iasmina, the competition winner, completed Level 2 last year and is now close to finishing her Level 3 Hairdressing course at ACL. When asked about her creative process and motivation, she explained,

“The theme was sustainability, I used jeans material as you can use it for anything. From one pair of jeans, you can make bags you can make materials for gardening tools, kids toys and so much more. It took me 2 weeks to plan the idea using my son’s old jeans then to come up with a mood board.”

She mentioned that in their course, they studied Avant Garde with a spring theme. She created a design featuring butterflies and flowers, expressing to her tutor that she felt drawn to this style as a creative individual. She continued to discuss her course, mentioning that she has gained valuable knowledge in other areas that interests her:

“I learnt a lot so far, helping people with their health problems including dermatitis and other scalp conditions so I know how to treat these conditions.”

Iasmina shared her plans for the future, saying,

“I’m going to try find more competitions where my designs may get noticed.”

Congratulations to Iasmina and the rest of the learners on their fantastic designs!
