This year, we are keen to bust myths around apprenticeships.
We’re busting myths about apprenticeships this National Apprenticeship Week (5-11 February). We’re keen to show apprenticeships are open to all and highlight the varied career opportunities on offer.
Myth: You need to be a school leaver to do an apprenticeship.
Fact: You can do an apprenticeship at any age.
Apprenticeships can be for school leavers, but they are open to all. Some learners are supported by their employer to take on an apprenticeship. Others want to enter or return to the workforce. Some apprentices are career-changers. Apprenticeships are for everyone, regardless of career stage.
Myth: There is an upper age limit on becoming an apprentice.
Fact: There is no upper age limit on becoming an apprentice.
ACL Essex has two categories for apprenticeship learners: 16-18 and 19+. There is no upper age limit to becoming an apprentice. Apprenticeships are suitable to anyone who wishes to retrain, start a new job, progress in their current role or return to the workplace.
Myth: Apprenticeships are only available in manual industries.
Fact: There are apprenticeships available in a wide variety of industries.
There are a range of apprenticeships at ACL Essex. For example: learners can build their skills in business with a Business Administrator course. Or, if they would prefer to work with young children, there are Early Years Practitioner apprenticeships. For people who want to work in the IT industry, IT Solutions Technician apprenticeships are available, in both hardware and software, plus many more.
Myth: You must attend college one day per week.
Fact: You do not need to attend college once a week; you may attend once every few months.
On many apprenticeships with ACL Essex, it is not necessary to attend college once a week. With ACL Essex, learners are immersed in their new job role and will complete on-the-job training. There will be taught sessions at ACL Essex centres, but there is also the chance for distance learning through ACL Essex’s virtual and digital learning platforms. ACL Essex also provides one-to-one coaching at learners’ place of work.
