The Poppins Early Years Bursary: Simone’s Journey into Early Years

We recently caught up with learner Simone to hear about her inspiring journey from administration to early years education. Read on to learn more about her story.

Simone began her career in administration before taking time out to raise her children. During this time, she discovered a passion for education through homeschooling, which inspired her to train as a Teaching Assistant. After completing both Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications with Adult Community Learning (ACL), Simone was encouraged by her employer to explore Early Years education, where she now works as a practitioner.

“Homeschooling my own children really opened my eyes to how much I enjoy working with young learners.”

Simone is currently completing the Level 3 Early Years Educator Apprenticeship with ACL. Originally from South Africa, she found the UK education system quite different, but ACL’s supportive environment helped her adapt and thrive.

“ACL have always been supportive, especially when I entered the UK education system, which was very different from what I was used to.”

Simone values the opportunity to work and study simultaneously, noting that each session has added meaningful insight to her role. She enjoys the variety of the Early Years sector, the strong sense of teamwork, and the rewarding nature of working with young children. Looking ahead, Simone hopes to progress to a Level 4 qualification and take on more senior responsibilities in the sector.

Impact of the Poppins Bursary

The Poppins Bursary has been instrumental in Simone’s journey, removing financial barriers and enabling her to access training that fits around her family and work life.

“The bursary and apprenticeship funding have supported me by allowing me to access this training for free. I wouldn’t have had the opportunity otherwise.”

A Message to Future Learners

Simone encourages others to consider a career in Early Years:

“It’s hard work, and you may need a trial period, but it is incredibly rewarding—especially when you get to engage with young people.”
