GCSE results: David’s career goes to the next level

Adult learners across Essex opened their GCSE results on Thursday 21 August. This year, ACL Essex supported lots of adults to boost their career opportunities by gaining GCSEs in English, Maths and Science.

David Scales is 53, lives in Colchester but has worked in Chelmsford for the last seven years as an Emergency Care Support Worker for the Ambulance Service. David studied Level 2 English at ACL Essex’s Colchester site, and he had previously passed Level 1 and 2 Maths, and Level 1 English with ACL Essex. David studied to progress his career in the Ambulance Service to become a technician. David explains more:

“I passed and that was exactly what I needed, and I’m happy about that. To progress in my role, you need a C (grade 4 equivalent) or above in English and Maths. If you haven’t got them the Ambulance Service offers courses in-house for functional skills Level 2. However, I used ACL Essex instead as I’ve had such great success with them before.

“I didn’t do very well at school back in 1988, I didn’t apply myself very well. My teachers would say that I would not aspire to very much. So even if I didn’t want to go for the technician job in the Ambulance Service, I wanted to do this for my own peace of mind, to say I can do it.

“It doesn’t matter what your ability or levels are, we’ve all got strengths and weaknesses, and I know what my weaknesses are, and I try to push them to become strengths.”

“ACL Essex is great. My previous courses were all in-person, but I chose the online Level 2 English this time. It took more discipline on my part, but I got what I needed.”
