We are investing in new sustainable practises and technology as part of our commitment to the global UNFCCC ‘Race to Zero’ campaign.
We are not only embedding sustainability into our curriculum but are also investing heavily in new technology that will ensure sustainable growth.
Recently, ACL Witham received a £300k investment in environmentally friendly power. The new equipment includes 107 Solarwatt Classic panels, a Daikin air source heat pump unit and LED lighting. Since the new technology was installed in April 2022, the site has saved thousands of pounds in fuel bills.
As part of our move towards sustainable learning, we have introduced hybrid classrooms across our centres, where learners can log in to a variety of courses from home or at work, or travel to a classroom setting. Thanks to hybrid learning, courses are now more accessible for those who cannot easily get to a centre; whilst also reducing CO2 emissions, with fewer students getting into cars and buses to make the journey.
Councillor Tony Ball, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education Excellence, Lifelong Learning and Employability, said: “ACL Essex is investing heavily into sustainable technology, and by making these changes, it not only benefits the environment with reduced running costs, but also helps provide the very best experience for their learners.”
He continued: “It is part of ACL Essex’s mission to embed sustainability into the curriculum as well as the community. Those who prefer in-person interaction can head to a centre, but it’s great that ACL Essex is making it easier for those who can only attend courses online.”
Adding to the learning provider’s technology and sustainable transformation, Skills Hubs will be rolled out at various centres across the county. These purpose-built rooms will allow individuals to access technology, complete online courses and initial assessments, and improve their digital skills. A facilitator will also be available to help with any technical difficulties or questions that may arise.
In July 2022, we unveiled our newest centre in Harlow Library, a new partnership to offer community learning in a very accessible way. Learners enjoy access to digital facilities, hybrid classroom services as well as exhibition spaces and a community café.
