What is Art Deco?

Its influence is evident in many areas from fine art, architecture, textiles, fashion, jewellery, ceramics, illustration to industrial and product design. Items were sometimes handcrafted. It was inspired by many things, art from around the world, the paintings of the Cubists, Egyptian artifacts and new modern machines. Aim:
To design your own art deco inspired flower pattern.
What materials will you need:
Two pieces of paper, 1 sketching pencil and some coloured pencils.
Step 1: Look at the photograph of the flowers or use your own image. Can you draw an outline, where are the colours lighter and darker? Can you shade some areas in.
Step 2: If you look at image B, in the top corner I am starting to simplify the shapes, they are round and not as detailed.
Step 3: Draw out on a separate sheet your design outline.
Step 4: Select some key art deco colours, I have created my design in gold and black. Colour in your design, See Image C. Add layers of colour on top of each other.
Step 5: A dark background works well and adds contrast, it enhances the art deco style. You could colour in your background.
Step 6: For the final art deco touches, a small amount of darker colour on top and outline in black the areas you would really like to stand out.
