Our ESOL team attended the NATECLA (National Association for Teaching English and Other Community Languages to Adults) conference in Birmingham from 24-25 June.
Carol Samlal (ESOL/Digital Skills tutor at ACL Harlow) is the regional chair for the East of England branch and plays a key role in NATECLA activity. She delivered a well-received workshop on ‘Sustainability in ESOL’ to ESOL managers and practitioners from across the country. You can find out more about how we are including sustainability into our curriculum.
Alex Bates, Curriculum Manager, also shared the work that ACL staff have completed on the OTLA 8 project this year. OTLA8 is ETF funded Action Research project. This year the focus was on IT, ESOL and English. Funding has been used to develop resources to embed digital skills across the ESOL/English curriculum areas and help differentiate for ESOL and literacy learners on IT courses. The keynote speaker’s emphasis was on policy and the work NATECLA does in creating and lobbying for a national ESOL strategy. There was also a really practical overview of OFSTED from providers (New City College/Thurrock Adult Ed). This will be shared for OFSTED readiness with the ESOL team.
Well done to everyone for their involvement!
